There are many different kinds of camping tents available. You just have to know what kind of camping that you intend on doing. If you plan on backpacking then you will want to purchase a lightweight 1 to 2 person tent. If you are taking your family to a campground then a family camping tent for 4 or more people should be adequate. If you are planning on camping during the harsh winter months, then nothing but a 4-season tent will do.

3-season tents are usually made for 1 to 8 people. Sometimes weight is a concern, say for backpackers, and sometimes weight is not a concern, for instance, families. 4-season tents are typically made for rugged conditions and weight is usually a factor as well.

Hubba Hubba (2008) 3-Season Backpacking Tent

Updated for 2008! The best-selling, award-winning Hubba Hubba features dual stay-dry entrances, two ample vestibules and a spacious freestanding design. The minimum weight of the 2-person Hubba Hubba is a mere 3 lb. 14 oz.! The unique pole configuration of the Hubba Hubba provides 29 square feet of interior space and a full 40 inches of interior height for maximum livability. Strong and supportive, DAC NSL aluminum poles are extremely lightweight. Dependable MSR Ultralight Needle Stakes are included to aid in securing the freestanding Hubba Hubba. Dual vestibules offer a combined 17.5 square feet of additional protected storage space. Extensive mesh construction keeps weight to a minimum while maximizing ventilation. The Hubba Hubba is extremely breathable which increases livability and combats the build-up of condensation on the interior of the tent. In warm, clear weather, you can tie-back the exterior doors to allow even greater airflow. MSR's stay-dry design prevents roof run-off from dripping into the interior of the tent when the fly is open. The Hubba Hubba employs taped seams on the floor and rainfly to prevent leaks. The stress points are reinforced to prevent tear-outs, and the guy lines are reflective to help you find your way back to your tent in the dark. If you prefer to travel even lighter, the Hubba Hubba rainfly can be used alone or in tandem with an optional footprint (sold separately), making the Hubba Hubba a feather-light freestanding minimalist shelter.
