There are many different kinds of camping tents available. You just have to know what kind of camping that you intend on doing. If you plan on backpacking then you will want to purchase a lightweight 1 to 2 person tent. If you are taking your family to a campground then a family camping tent for 4 or more people should be adequate. If you are planning on camping during the harsh winter months, then nothing but a 4-season tent will do.
3-season tents are usually made for 1 to 8 people. Sometimes weight is a concern, say for backpackers, and sometimes weight is not a concern, for instance, families. 4-season tents are typically made for rugged conditions and weight is usually a factor as well.
